Words for Pain

and Suffering

Many at times, we do not understand why we go through pain and suffering and people often argue that when we go through them, we are being punished by God. That was the case of Jobs’ friends when they heard of his affliction. Job was a righteous and God-fearing man. Satan approached God and God told him about the righteousness of Job. Satan replied to God saying that Job is righteous only because he has been blessed financially and has many possessions. Satan therefore asked God’s permission to bring hardship upon Job and see if Job would continue to be faithful to Him. Job lost his sons, daughters and all his possessions but he still continued to worship God. Because Job continued to worship God, Satan went back to God and asked permission to attack his health. Job was afflicted with boils and was in great pain. Job’s wife could not bear watching him go through the pain and therefore asked him to curse God, but Job would not listen to her. Jobs’ friends could not understand why he would go through pain and suffering because he was someone who had faith in God. They thought Job should only enjoy blessings because he was a righteous man and should not suffer pain. In the end, God blessed Job double more than he had before. Job did not understand why he suffered such great pain, but he realized that God was God and Job was to believe that God was in control (Job 1, 2). We learn through pain and suffering, it equips us to help others in the same situations. Our pain and suffering draws us closer to God. Maybe you are going through a great pain and you may be thinking it’s because of something you did. Even if so, be assured that God wants His grace, His mercy, His love, and works to be displayed in you. He loves you, He is good and you can trust and rest in His perfect plan for your life.
